Gallery Night’s 2024 Season Begins: Hop on a bus and see some art!

Written by Dora Waite for Motif Magazine, April 15th 2024

“As a recent college graduate who is always looking to save a pretty penny, I’m frequently looking for budget-friendly things to do. I was in luck this month, as Gallery Night Providence started back up with its free guided tours. On the third Thursday of every month from March to November, Gallery Night Providence offers free guided trolley and mini-coach bus tours to museums, galleries, and studios throughout the city and surrounding areas. I consider myself someone who likes and appreciates art, but rarely looks for “the deeper meaning.” So I hopped on the bus on opening night to see what they had to offer a novice art enthusiast such as myself, and was not disappointed.”

All Aboard: A first-person account of this third-Thursday art tour by trolley

“Whether you’re an art enthusiast looking for a fun introduction to the Providence creative scene or just a fan of meeting new people while sipping free wine, Gallery Night Providence is a lovely way to spend a Thursday night. For the past 25 years, the tour has been introducing individuals to the works of local artists by ushering them between city galleries via trolley.”

This trolley tour will show you why Providence is still the renaissance city

Written by Amy Russo for The Providence Journal, May 2022

“It’s not often one sees a didgeridoo performance and a larger-than-life Buddha in one night. But on Gallery Night, it’s just another evening. Back from their pandemic-induced virtual tours on Facebook Live, the guided treks through Providence's art scene kicked off this month. I joined the first trip of the season, filing into the lobby of the Graduate Providence hotel, where a cluster of tourists awaited the start of our excursion. That’s where I met our captain, Frank Toti, who’s been at this for about five years. Ushering passengers outside and into a white trolley, he delivered his pitch: “I love food, so think of tonight as going to a tapas bar for art.” As I consider tapas its own food group, routinely scarfing down bar bites once a week, my interest was piqued…”

Local podcast features Gallery Night

This July, our executive director Michelle Maynard and tour guide Larisa Martino sat down with Tayla Cardillo of the Cranston Public Library’s “Down Time” podcast to talk about Gallery Night Providence. They share how you can enjoy the Providence art scene, and also discuss the William Hall Library book club and Tayla’s million dollar app idea. During The Last Chapter they discuss the question: What artist would you like to meet and why?

Go See the Art!

In fall 2020, Gallery Night collaborated with local organization Mixed Magic Theatre to create this soulful and upbeat track that encourages people to, you guessed it, go see the art!

While our participating galleries do change from year to year (to see the current year’s participating galleries visit this page), this video absolutely captures the energy and spirit of Gallery Night.

You can also check out a longer video on YouTube, “The Making of: Go See the Art!” which features a brief interview with our former Executive Director Alyssa Heller and co-founder of Mixed Magic Theater Ricardo Pitts-Wiley.
